Station readings & heatmap
Open-Meteo hourly terrain-aware model (CC BY 4.0); official observations from the Estonian Environment Agency, LHMT / Meteo.lt, FMI, SMHI, MET Norway / Seklima, Icelandic Meteorological Office, IMGW–PIB, DMI (including Greenland), LVGMC and Environment and Climate Change Canada / MSC. Coastlines: Natural Earth / world-atlas. Źródłem pochodzenia danych jest Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej – Państwowy Instytut Badawczy.
Sustained wind & gusts
Official station numbers: national meteorological services in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Poland, plus DMI for Greenland and ECCC/MSC for Canada. A shared snapshot is refreshed every 10 minutes and checked every 5 minutes while enabled. Observation periods vary by provider and are shown in station popups. Canada uses quality-checked 10-minute mean wind and measured instantaneous maximum over 10 minutes, converted from km/h to m/s. Greenland uses DMI 10-minute mean wind and the highest 3-second mean in that period. Missing measurements remain unavailable. Historical selections use only earlier available readings; observations older than 3 hours are hidden. The particle animation remains model-only. Open-Meteo hourly 10 m sustained wind, gusts and model direction (CC BY 4.0).
Daylight imagery & infrared
EUMETSAT Meteosat GeoColour / FCI IR10.5 and cloud mask; NOAA GOES-East and GOES-West GeoColor / Band 13 via NASA GIBS; EUMETSAT Metop-C AVHRR IR10.8 over the Arctic. Local daylight selects visible imagery; darkness selects infrared. Actual source observation times appear in the layer status.
Radar & rainfall accumulation
Nordic radar: FMI (Finland), SMHI (Sweden), MET Norway, DMI (Denmark), and the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Official data are decoded and reprojected to this map; source times are shown below. Reflectivity is converted to approximate rain intensity using a Z–R relation; snow, terrain and ground echoes can affect it. Iceland uses each available radar’s lowest corrected reflectivity scan, rather than a national composite. Missing observations stay transparent. Iceland is checked every minute while visible, through a cached live service reading official IMO scans. Polar cells are interpolated in linear reflectivity to soften rendering streaks; unknown observations remain transparent. Source terrain shadows and beam limitations can remain. A GitHub archive is retained as fallback. Denmark reads official DMI observation times directly and displays DMI’s official web radar images, reprojected to this map. Grey source cartography is masked. The GitHub archive remains a fallback if direct metadata is unavailable.
Radar: Estonian Environment Agency, LVĢMC (Latvia), and LHMT / Meteo.lt (Lithuania). Gauge precipitation: Estonian Environment Agency, LVĢMC, LHMT, FMI, SMHI, MET Norway / Seklima, DMI and Icelandic Meteorological Office where complete. Iceland uses published 1-, 24- and 48-hour station totals; Latvia and Norway use official hourly measurements; Norway includes MET Norway stations with measured primary-sensor rainfall. Open-Meteo rain + showers (CC BY 4.0) fills unsupported countries and gaps. Coastlines: Natural Earth / world-atlas.
Centres, history & forecasts
NOAA / NCEP GFS model fields for low-pressure centres, pressure, movement, wind, gusts and tracks. Model-derived cold and warm fronts use the same GFS cycle with 850 hPa temperature and wind; they are an objective diagnostic rather than an official hand-analysed synoptic chart. NOAA NHC supplies matched Atlantic tropical-storm names. European names are checked against dated Met Office storm impacts and named MET Norway wind alerts. Matches to model centres are inferred from region and time; ambiguous systems keep tracking IDs. Past tracks contain elapsed modelled positions, not official observed tracks.
Official severe weather alerts
Estonian Environment Agency, LVĢMC, LHMT / Meteo.lt, FMI CAP, IMGW–PIB, DMI (Denmark and Greenland), ECCC (Canada), and MeteoAlarm / EUMETNET national services for the other supported Nordic countries. Country outlines: Natural Earth / world-atlas. Estonian marine warning zones follow Natural Earth coastlines and exclude mainland and mapped islands; Lake Peipsi follows the lake outline. Their outer forecast-zone boundaries approximate the official named regions.
Daily snow cover & sea ice
NOAA / U.S. National Ice Center / National Weather Service. Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS), daily Northern Hemisphere snow and ice analysis at 1 km resolution. Analysts combine satellite and surface information.
Latest maps use the 1 km NOAA service. The rolling 14-day daily history uses official 4 km IMS analyses from the NSIDC archive. Dates are the valid 00:00 UTC analysis dates; missing days are omitted, never interpolated. Station depths are hidden on historical dates because they are current observations. White shows snow-covered land, cyan shows sea ice. Transparent areas include snow-free surfaces and missing data. The white/cyan imagery shows coverage, not depth or falling snow. Station labels provide measured snow depths separately. Depth sources: Keskkonnaagentuur daily climate data (cm), FMI daily snow observations (cm), SMHI parameter 8 (metres converted to cm), LVĢMC hourly station measurements (cm, CC0), LHMT / Meteo.lt snowDepth (cm, CC BY-SA 4.0), MET Norway / Seklima surface_snow_thickness (cm, CC BY 3.0 NO), and Icelandic Meteorological Office daily 09:00 UTC snow depths (cm). LHMT data are adapted into the shared snapshot under CC BY-SA 4.0; source readings retain their dates. Norway includes MET Norway stations and excludes modelled, interpolated and erroneous values. Icelandic measurements are provisional. Special trace and patchy snow codes remain separate from numeric depths. Provisional readings are identified in the popup. The map projection displays up to 85°N; the immediate polar cap is outside this view.
